New Year…Same Poll…Who Dis?

It’s a new year, which means that it’s time for the first #HBCUHoopsWeekly Division 1 Men’s Basketball poll for 2025. The conference seasons for the SWAC and MEAC (as well as the Coastal Athletic Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference for our independent brethren) are in high gear. There have already been a few surprises in the MEAC, most notably league favorite Norfolk State falling on the road in Charm City at Morgan State. Howard also dropped a shocker to NCAA Division II CIAA and local rival Bowie State in an upset. Bowie also earned a win on the road against another D1 HBCU program in Hampton earlier in the season. The SWAC opened up their conference slate with the typical level of chaos, with both Jackson State and Prairie View A&M not only getting their first wins of the season but getting off to blazing hot starts in league play, nesting at 2nd and 3rd respectively behind the Southern University “Running Jags”.

How will this first stretch of league play shape this month’s #HBCUHoopsWeekly men’s poll? Let’s take a look. Without further adieu, here’s the #HBCUHW men’s basketball poll for January 17th, 2025:

1) Norfolk State – (12-8 overall; 3-1 in the MEAC)
2) Southern – (9-8 overall; 4-0 in the SWAC)
